Lyric Analysis
Lyric Analysis is an important part of planning for a music video, this is because we then realised what sort of aspects we would need to include within our music video in order to make it the most effective as possible. Below is our analysis of the lyrics.
Chorus:
Hold
Hold on
Hold on to me
'Cause I'm a little unsteady
A little unsteady
Verse 1:
Mama, come here
Approach, appear
Daddy, I'm alone
'Cause this house don't feel like home
If you love me, don't let go
If you love me, don't let go
Verse 2:
Mother, I know
That you're tired of being alone
Dad, I know you're trying
To fight when you feel like flying
If you love me, don't let go
If you love me, don't let go
We think that the repetition of 'Hold on' is a plea for help, and the use of 'Unsteady' shows that he is weak and physically/mentally unstable. The repetition of the chorus throughout the song emphasizes this point and makes the audience feel empathetic towards the artist.
We think that 'Mama, come here, approach, appear' means that he can see that his mum is upset about something, maybe a divorce seeing as it says 'Daddy, I'm alone' or it could mean that his mum has passed away and therefore he feels alone due to his dad not being there for him all the time. 'Causes this house don't feel like home', we think that this means that his house does not feel somewhere that he can be happy it's just a place to live in due to the family problems occurring. 'If you love me don't let go', this is making the artist question the parents about whether they do truly love their child and if they do why are they trying to leave him or forget about him.
We think that the next verse, 'Mother, I know, that you're tired of being alone', this line suggests that the mother, is clearly upset but even though he is aware of how much pain both parents are in he wants them to stay in a relationship. This verse could also suggest that the parents are even closer to separating and now the child feels more distant from them hence why he refers to them as 'mother and dad'. The bit about the dad could suggest that the Dad feels like leaving now but he is trying to stay with his mother even though he does not want to. However, this could also relate to drinking, he is trying not to drink however he wants to have the feeling of flying which is what drink gives him.
Overall, I think that this song is about family problems and problems in which the artist suffers from himself, we will therefore need to include problems similar to these within our music video so that the audience can easily relate tot he music video and the lyrics of the song making our music video the most successful that it could possibly be. I feel as if the repetition of 'hold on' throughout the music video is one of the most effective lines as it emphasizes that the artist is struggling and needs help at this moment of time due to what his family is going through.
