Brief Analysis of Music Videos

1. Come by Jain

Jain is an indie pop artist who is a French songwriter. Her music video of Come is seen as being very abstract due to the fact that it includes an optical illusion in almost every frame of her video. One example clones of her are walking up the stairs even though the stairs are going downwards whilst she is sitting down singing, this makes the audience feel trippy and want to watch more in order to see what else she includes. There are many close ups of her singing in one particular is where she is wearing the same pattern clothing as the wallpaper in the shot, this could represent how she is trying to fit into society by wearing the same things as everyone else.

2. Feels by Calvin Harris

Calvin Harris is a very popular electro-pop artist. His music video of feels in my opinion is very successful, although there is no clear narrative, the editing is very good and there is a use of green screen throughout the video which makes it look professional. The editing follows the tempo of the song and we see many up close shots of the performers either dancing/singing or playing a musical instrument. We also see the use of parrots bobbing their heads to the song which adds a sense of humor to the video. I think that using a green screen could be a possibility in our music video for when we have close ups of the artist singing the song as I feel it would give us more freedom and allow the music video to look better and more professional.

3. Sorry Not Sorry by Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato is a popular american pop artist. Her music video to Sorry Not Sorry shows aspects of her real life events, it was based around a house party in which she held in late June last year. This music video is performance based as we can see the excitement on both her and the guests faces whilst at the party. She uses quick editing to relate to the tempo of the song and due to the fact that the majority of Demi Lovato's fans are young we can easily see how they would relate as house parties are common things that occur at a young age. We can see flashy cars, for example, the Jaguar at the beginning and also girls in revealing clothing and flashy clothing which suggests that there is a lot of wealth at the party.

4. The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars is a American pop artist. His conceptual music video of The Lazy Song was very popular when it was first released due to it being very different from usual music videos. He included himself and 5 monkey faces on other actors, and they performed in sync. Due to the fact that they performed in sync and were wearing monkey masks, it created a sense of humor for the audience watching it. The lyrics of the song are also very relatable to people's everyday lives and the acting reinforces the lyrics so that people understand the song.

5. Nothing Like This by Craig David

This music video is a performance type music video which shows Craig David on stage with two drummers behind him throughout the whole music video. There is no story line to it however it is effective due to the fact that the lighting lightens the mood of the song and also the editing is edited to the tempo of the song and the effects makes the music video look very professional. We can also see Craig David looking into the camera a lot and singing which makes the audience feel more interacted with him as he is in theory looking at them. This type of music video would be difficult for us to make as neither of us have a big stage presence and we do not know of anyone who does and also neither of us play an instrument.

6. There's Nothing Holding Me Back by Shawn Mendes

This song is about a boy and a girl who are boyfriend and girlfriend that go exploring together, it is a narrative type music video as we can clearly see that there is a beginning, middle and an end. Throughout the music video it follows the structure of narrative-close up of artist/performers-narrative, I think that this is the structure that Joe and I will follow as I believe that this works the best. The tempo of the song was clearly considered when thinking about the editing as it suits the style of the music video perfectly, this allows the audience to realise what the story is about when they listen to the lyrics and see the visuals from the video itself.

7. You Want Me by Tom Zanetti

Tom Zanetti is a house/dance music artist. Throughout this music video we can see the wealth, at the beginning we see a Rolls Royce turn up at a mansion with gates outside, girls wearing revealing outfits drinking champagne, men wearing suits and trousers. This music video is a performance and conceptual based music video as the performers are all dancing and the tempo of the song is related to the editing. The music video was based around a house party at a mansion and Tom Zanetti walks in last and seems like the popular guy as everyone comes up to him as if 'they want him'.

8. Common Sense by J HUS

J HUS is a hip hop artist, at the beginning of this music video we hear a voice over of him talking and once he has stopped talking the music starts. I feel as if we could us this in our music video as it would allow us to explain the story line a little bit before the music video starts so that people are not confused. We later see J HUS sitting down at a table with 2 others drinking wine and sitting with stacks of cash in front of them, we later see two girls being money thrown at them as if they are prostitutes and later on see a female laying on a screen full of cash. This relates to the lyrics of the song so that the audience can understand what is happening. If we were going to create a hip hop film then I believe that we would have to include many features that show wealth which I think would be difficult to do so I think that we will stay away from this genre.

9. Fight Night by Migos

Migos is a hip hop trio, in the music video Fight Night we also see many similar conventions as we do in Common Sense. For example we see lots of golden chains and expensive cars. There are many low angles of the trio throughout the video which gives them a sense of superiority and makes people feel intimidated. These types of music videos also relate to the song as shown in this video as it is talking about a Fight Night and we see throughout the video different shots of a woman training up for the Fight Night which is later shown in the video. The lighting is high key in places where the artists are however behind them the lighting is dark and low key which could reinforce the intimidation factor.

10. Human by Rag'N'Bone Man

Rag'N'Bone Man is a popular pop artist and Human was his first ever hit single. The music video for this is a conceptual and narrative based video and we see him at the centre of the majority of frames looking into the camera, however his face changes to other people's which illustrates that everybody is 'Human' despite the fact that they may look different to other people. We can see his emotion in his face for a lot of the music video and we can tell that he is passionate about this topic through his facial emotions. The lyrics work in relation to the visuals for example he sings 'don't beg for forgiveness for making you cry' as we see a photo of a man crying looking stressed. Overall I feel as if this is an effective music video as it gets a message across to the audience and could change their opinion on the way they think.

11. Take Me To Church by Hozier

This song is about a gay couple who clearly are not seen to be normal by one particular group of boys and the boys are all dressed up in hoodies and balaclavas and go to one of the gay boys house and trash the place looking for him. The music video is all shot in black and white which reflects upon the sad action in which these boys are not accepting gay people in society. The editing is also in sync with the music and all of the cinematography is hand held which could suggest that what is happening here is scaring the actors, for example the gay partner who is watching his partner being beaten or the dad who got beaten up as a consequence of his son being gay.

12. Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO

LMFAO are an electronic hip hop duo, they created this music video in 2011. It is a performance based music video and we constantly see the duo dancing through the streets or in set locations with background dancers behind them. They wear bright clothing which represents the bright lights that are usually associated with the electronic genre. At the beginning of the music video there is a 20 second gap before the music starts where it allows you to begin to understand what is happening in the video before the music starts to play. The lyrics are about partying and as we can see in the visuals the performers do exactly that through dance offs or just dancing in the street.

After having analysed these 12 different music videos, it has allowed me to understand what the different genres of music video tend to include throughout their videos. Hip Hop usually include wealthy features, electro usually includes bright lights, and pop/indie music usually includes a story line about love or a relationship etc. I feel that from doing this research I now have a better idea as to what myself and Joe could include in our music video to allow it to fit into our chosen genre the best it possibly can.
